Got Teenagers?
Parents are concerned about younger children finding guns
they believe they’ve stored safely in their homes, but
unfortunately, the number of U.S. teens that die each year
from gun injuries is significant, and teens finding guns actually
pose a greater risk.
Archives of Pediatrics
& Adolescent Medicine reported on a study
conducted recently on nearly 400 parents who owned firearms.
The study asked about their attitudes and beliefs about guns,
ownership and storage practices.
In approximately 28 percent of homes polled, the children
were between 13 to 17 years of age. 29 percent of homes with
children 12 years of age or younger had unlocked guns, compared
with 42 percent of homes with children between 13 to 17 years
of age. These homes had the highest rates of unsafe gun-storage
practices.
