Lifting Slings Should Be Inspected

A recent incident with a crane in Saudi Arabia is an important reminder to inspect slings used for lifting. If the slings are not properly certified, they should not be used.

The case involved a nearly new 600 Ton Manitowoc crane that had just been inspected and was being operated by a reputable contractor. During a simple routine lift, the sling snapped, dropping the load and the flipping the crane jib back over the cab. The jib landed on a pipe rack and crashed into an office, killing two staff. The crane itself was destroyed.

Apparently no one had inspected the slings, although they appeared to be fine.
