Use Laser Pointers with Caution

The FDA requires manufacturers to classify their lasers by risk category (1-4). Laser pointers (aiming and range finding devices, supermarket scanners) are categorized as Class II, in that they are low power and do not cause harm under normal use. For example, you must stare intentionally for up to 15 minutes to cause harm.

However, the FDA is requiring a warning be placed on pointers, advising users not to look into the beam. These warnings are small and easy to ignore, as evidenced in widespread misuse of the devices.

Laser Pointer Tips:
1. Never shine a laser pointer at anyone. Laser pointers are designed to illustrate inanimate objects.
2. Do not allow minors to use a pointer unsupervised.
Laser pointers are not toys.
3. Do not point a laser pointer at mirror-like surfaces. A reflected beam can act like a direct beam on the eye.
4. Be aware of irresponsible uses of pointers so the psychological effect will be minimized if you are illuminated by one.
5. Do not purchase a laser pointer if it does not have a caution or danger sticker on it identifying its class. Report suspicious devices to the FDA.
