Guard Against Heat Stress and Heat Disorders
Heat Stress
Four environmental factors contribute to heat stress: temperature, humidity, radiant heat and air velocity. These factors along with the person's age, weight, fitness, medical condition and acclimatization to the heat, influence the level of heat stress that can be experienced.
Common symptoms
Loss of concentration or difficulty focusing on a task
Becoming irritable or sick
Loss of the desire to drink fluids

Remove the person from the heat
Heat Disorders
Heat stroke is most serious health problem a worker can experience in hot environments. It is caused by the body’s inability to regulate its core temperature. Sweating stops and the body can no longer rid itself of excess heat.
Common symptoms
Mental confusion, delirium, loss of consciousness, convulsions and/or coma
Body temperature of 106 degrees F or higher
Hot dry skin which may be red, mottled and/or blueish
First Aid
Call 9-1-1
Remove the person from the heat
Soak the person’s clothing with cool water
Fan vigorously to increase cooling
Heat exhaustion results from heavy sweating in a person who has not drunk enough fluids or taking in enough salt or both.
Common symptoms
Extreme weakness or fatigue
Giddiness, nausea and/or headache
Clammy and moist skin
Complexion will be pale or flushed
Body temperature normal or slightly higher
First Aid
Have the victim rest in a cool place and drink an electrolyte solution
