Alcohol-based hand sanitizers are…well, flammable

As reported by CNN (see Cleaning up: More Businesses Offer Hand Sanitizers) the use of hand sanitizers has expanded from industrial to personal use in public places.

However, the general public is not necessarily aware of the dangers of using alcohol-based hand sanitizers. This unfortunate worker received serious burns while cupping his hands around the flame when lighting his cigarette in a windy environment.

And this HGTV article on “Grilling Safety,” advises readers to “keep a bottle of hand sanitizer next to the grill.” (At least, further clarification is in order.)

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has just issued a hand hygiene advisory in which it cautioned against overreliance on an alcohol-based hand sanitizer, saying it “does not replace the need for frequent and proper hand washing” and should be considered an adjunct to hand washing.
