Proforma Safety Performs Highly Specialized, Highly
Demanding Heavy Load Escorts
January 2008
Proforma Safety International (PSI) offers a unique service
to various industries that transport over-sized* loads on
highways across the United States and Canada. Proforma Safety
President Mike Arnold reports a significant number of record
heavy-haul moves were executed in 2007 by Proforma.
“These oversized heavy loads requiring special equipment
to transport,” he explained. “Our special equipped
S.W.A.T. (Safe Work Awareness Team) escort units helped several
major oil companies and fabricating facilities transport double
oversized loads to south Louisiana, Texas, New Mexico, Wyoming,
Utah and Oregon.”
These are the kinds of loads that you dread having to pass
on the road.
“When it hangs over the width of the trailer several
feet, takes two trailers in tandem to haul and is taller in
height than most overpasses, bridges and power lines, some
special considerations and planning are implemented to get
equipment or structures from one place to another,”
says Arnold.
Each Proforma Safety S.W.A.T. unit is fully equipped with
hands-free radios that communicate with other escort units,
the driver(s) of the transport trucks, local and state law
enforcement units and various DOT, weather and road condition
reporting agencies. All S.W.A.T. units have overhead 360 emergency
lights, a full array of grill and tailgate mounted warning
and signaling devices, two high-decibel sirens, GPS, video
cameras front and back and radar with forward and rear-facing
antennas. Each unit is high visibility marked for moving traffic
to the side of the road, providing maximum safety margins
when transporting oversized loads that extend over several
traffic lanes.
“Although permit loads are routed over rural roads,
less traveled highways, routes that have few bridges or overpasses
and on special permit corridors, people and traffic have to
warned and moved to the side long before the transport load
reaches them,” says Arnold. “The public’s
safety is our first concern. Damage to equipment and property
comes second.”
Proforma Safety uses highly experienced safety professionals
and advisors (in some cases, former State Police or ex-USDOT
agents) for their S.W.A.T. units. These experts are familiar
with all local, state and federal rules, regulations and laws.
“If it’s got to go over a roadway and it’s
got a size stipulation, we can sure see that it gets to its
final destination safely with no damage to the load, no harm
to the public or costly impact to anyone’s property,”
says Arnold.
