Proforma S.W.A.T. Observe Drilling Operations Down Under
in New Zealand
February 2008
Two HSE advisors from Proforma Safety S.W.A.T. (Safe Work
Awareness Team) departed Christmas Day 2007 for Taupo New
Zealand and the geo-thermal well site location of Century
Resources rig 27. Their assignment: observe the overall drilling
operations of the rig and its crew for safety awareness and
present a detailed report to the Century management group
on the current level of participation and involvement.
Mike Arnold, HSE Lead and Jim Dyson, Drilling Safety Expert,
spent fourteen days, 24 hours a day, observing drilling activities.
Another six days was spent overseeing a location move of Rig
27 to a new geo-thermal drill site some nine miles away. During
these observations, numerous safety improvements and suggestions
were made to both crew and rig management. Twenty-eight Safety
Toolbox meetings were attended, nine HSE meetings and several
JSAs, ASAs, STOP actions and site-specific safety training
were conducted.
Valuable information was obtained from these site observations
and the final report to Century Management provided detailed
guidelines for continued safety performance, improvements
in their safety management systems, a safety culture strengthening
agenda and numerous new ideas for safety program development
and implementation.
Equipped with this information, Century management will continue
to improve the safety of their drilling operations in New
Zealand, Australia, India and Indonesia.
Mike Arnold commented on their experience. “Century
is a company dedicated to safety,” he said. “The
company is to be commended for their safety awareness, HSE
attitude and especially their continued commitment toward
an incident-free rig and drill site.”
Proforma has committed one HSE advisor onsite in New Zealand
to continue to work with Century for an extended period of
time. Other of Century’s drilling operations will be
included in this safety overview program.
