Success Story: Crew Response Saves Balder

The Deepwater Construction Vessel (DCV) Balder owned by Heerema Marine Contractors will restart in February after having flooded on December 28, when the crew heard a flood alarm sound in the DP-control room, indicating a problem on the port side, B-Columns (center column). As water flowing into the pump-room. the engineer judged the situation too dangerous for his crew and evacuated the B-Columns.

Within five minutes, the crew on in the control room got the indication on their panel that the watertight doors were closed. The muster alarm was raised and all personnel went to their stations; ERT teams involved in stabilizing the situation reported in the Engine Control Room to the chief engineer.

Within a short time, the “all safe” was given and personnel returned to their locations with the exception of the machinery deck corridor.

Investigation showed that the port-side half pipe tunnel aft and port-side, B-Columns had flooded.
